Eucalyptus is a diverse genus of evergreen trees, native to Australia and Tasmania, which have been extensively cultivated throughout parts of Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, and the southern United States. Eucalyptus comes from the Greek śeucalyptos,ť meaning śwell covered.ť More than 700 species of eucalyptus have been identified. 1
The essential oil of eucalyptus is produced from the cineole-rich species, Eucalyptus globulus. In addition to its key component, 1,8-cineol (also known as eucalyptol), the essential oil contains a number of beneficial terpenes and ketones, such as D-limonene, globulol, and carvone.1
Eucalyptus oil has been recognized for its support of upper respiratory health by the German Commission E, a world-wide recognized authority on the safety and efficacy of herbal supplements.*1
How Does It Work?
Research has shown that extracts of eucalyptus oil help maintain healthy sinus drainage and airway mucous secretion by promoting a healthy balance of natural anti-inflammatory compounds, in particular, leukotriene B4 (LTB4), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-1-beta (IL-1â), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-á).* 2 In addition, scientific study has found that pure eucalyptus oil supports the healthy activity of early growth response factor-1 (Egr-1).*3 Egr-1 is a transcription factor, which controls the expression of a number of genes, including those involved in the body's natural anti-inflammatory response, cardiovascular health, and cellular growth. Finally, eucalyptus oil extracts have also been shown to enhance cilia beat frequency, which aids in respiratory clearing.*4 Cilia are the tiny hair-like projections that line the bronchus in the lungs and help move debris up and out of the airways.
Clinically studied Solendum has been proven to naturally speed relief.* In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 75 volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either Solendum sinus formula* (200 mg) or placebo three times daily. After only four days of supplementation, significant improvement in sinus and respiratory health was noted in the Solendum group.* When compared to placebo, the test group experienced nearly twice the improvement.* After seven days, supplementation with eucalyptus oil extract yielded an 81 percent improvement, whereas the placebo group experienced only 41 percent.*4 The research revealed that Solendum offers fast-acting, soothing relief for sinus and bronchial passages.* The product was well tolerated; side effects were rare and insignificant.
Another double-blind clinical trial examined the benefits of eucalyptus oil extract for upper and lower respiratory health.* Thirty-two participants were randomized to receive 200 mg of 1,8-cineol three times daily or placebo for 12 weeks. The body's natural anti-inflammatory response was measured. The study revealed that 75 percent of the eucalyptus oil users experienced significant benefits, whereas only 25 percent of the placebo group improved.5
Clinically studied Solendum sinus formula contains a pure form of eucalyptus oil that has been shown to support sinus and respiratory health.* The unique extract works with the body to provide fast-acting relief and clear-headed comfort, without inducing drowsiness.*
