How it Works:
While fats are essential for body function—including the formation of hormones and cell membranes, transport of fat soluble vitamins, and other activities—it has been well documented that diets high in fat are not associated with optimal health.5 However, the source of fat in the diet may be as critical to health as the amount of fat consumed. While polyunsaturated fats from fish, flax and other oils support many body systems, intake of saturated fats from animal sources (beef or pork) does not have the same documented health supportive effects.

Many followers of low-carbohydrate diets build their daily nutrient intake around consumption of fried, fatty animal protein foods (steak, hamburgers, bacon, etc). While this may indeed lead to a loss in body weight, it also causes a less than optimal intake of essential fatty acids, the “good” fats that support the heart, immune system, brain function, and also healthy skin and hair.† Specifically, favoring foods high in Omega-6 and low in Omega 3 fatty acids (such as fried chicken) leads to an imbalance in the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids, a key health indicator with significant health consequences.

Oils from cold water fish, flax (Linum usitatissimum) seed oil, and borage (Borago officinalis) oil are the most nutritionally dense sources of essential fatty acids. Intake of these three oils provides the essential fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), gamma linolenic acid (GLA), alpha linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid, and oleic acid resulting in an Omega-3/Omega-6 ratio of about 1:3.10-13 There is an abundance of statistically significant evidence demonstrating health supportive benefits from Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9 essential fatty acids.†

Fats and Skin Health
Both skin function and appearance, or attractiveness, depend on nutrition. Skin is a dynamic, active, multi-layered organ. The skin's primary layers consist of connective tissue and collagen fibers to provide integrity and support, as well as elastin fibers for flexibility and strength.16 Data has clearly demonstrated that the health of individual cells within these layers determines skin tone, texture, and light-reflective ability (complexion radiance).

Diets rich in Omega-9, Omega-6, and Omega-3 essential fatty acids provide significant health benefits for skin.† In laboratory research, these essential fatty acids rapidly incorporate into cell membranes and profoundly influence biological responses.16-19† Several studies have shown that supplemental fish oil helps retain skin appearance and elasticity after exposure to sunlight (UV radiation).† A review of well-controlled clinical studies and other human research shows that Omega-9, Omega-6, and Omega-3 consumption provides many additional health supportive benefits, including support of immune function, mental health, and the retention of healthy cholesterol levels that are within normal limits.†

Conclusion
Healthy Skin™† provides Omega –3, –6, and –9 fatty acids in a formula specifically designed for the low carbohydrate dieter. A recent clinical study found that following a low-carbohydrate diet, plus consumption of fish and flax oil led to greater weight loss and better heart health than following a traditional low fat diet.† As part of a low-carbohydrate weight loss plan, Healthy Skin helps dieters look and feel better as they reach their weight loss goals
