| How it Works: |
Dietary Fiber
Dietary fiber is the edible parts of
plants, or similar carbohydrates, that
are resistant to digestion and
absorption in the small intestine.
Dietary fiber passes through the stomach
and small intestine to the large
intestine, where it undergoes complete
or partial fermentation. Dietary fiber
plays many important roles in health,
including providing bulk to feces, which
aids elimination and supports regular
bowel movements.† It also supports
metabolic activity in the body by
inhibiting cholesterol absorption and
slowing glucose absorption in the small
intestine.1,2† Dietary fiber
has also been studied for its support of
the immune system and healthy white
blood cells.3-5† Finally,
dietary fiber supports digestion by
helping the colon become more acidic,
thus supporting the growth of beneficial
microflora in the intestines.2†
Vitamin A (beta
carotene)
Beta-carotene is converted in the body
to vitamin A. It is found naturally in
dark green leafy vegetables such as
spinach and romaine lettuce and in
orange-yellow vegetable such as carrots
and squash. Beta-carotene can act as an
antioxidant and helps boost the immune
system.6
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is found naturally in a
variety of fruits and vegetables,
including oranges, spinach, broccoli,
cabbage, Brussels sprouts and
strawberries. It also supports immune
function, cardiovascular health, and has
antioxidant properties.7-9†
Psyllium husk
Psyllium husk is a rich source of
concentrated soluble fiber that supports
healthy intestinal function.10,11†
Often used in laxation, psyllium husk
provides intestinal lubrication for ease
in elimination.12† In
studies, psyllium husk has been shown to
absorb up to fourteen times its weight
in water and has more re-absorption
ability than any other bowel-supporting
fiber.10† Psyllium husk also
supports healthy serum lipid levels that
are within normal limits, 13,14
healthy blood sugar metabolism that are
already within their normal limits,
15 healthy blood pressure that is
already within normal limits,16
healthy immune function,17
and intestinal microflora health.
18,19†
Pectin
Pectin from citrus fruit is a soluble
fiber that has been studied for its
support of immune health.20-22†
Lutein
Lutein is a carotenoid antioxidant found
in green leafy vegetables such as
spinach and lettuce, and is found in
tomatoes, broccoli, and oranges. It is
being considered one of the most
beneficial nutrients in the carotenoid
group, supporting immune health and
healthy colon function, as well as
vision by promoting macular health.23-29†
Lycopene
Lycopene is also a carotenoid found in
tomatoes. It has shown in scientific
studies to have immune supportive
properties.30,31† Lycopene
functions as an anti-aging antioxidant
with studies linking it to prostate and
cardiovascular health.†
Quercetin
Quercetin, a potent antioxidant, is a
flavonoid found in onions, berries and
apples.37,38 Quercetin has
been the subject of recent research
highlighting its beneficial support for
cardiovascular health.39†
Strict adherence to a
low-carb diet requires avoidance of
fiber and antioxidant containing fruits
and vegetables. Fruit & Veggie 5™
provides these important nutrients to
help the low-carb dieter stay healthy
while meeting their weight loss goals.† |
