The Facts in Brief

• Emergency Contraception or more commonly known as the "morning after pill" is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or in case of contraception failure.

• Obtaining emergency contraception from Rite Care Pharmacy is completely confidential. Minors have the right to access confidential family planning services (including EC) without parental consent in California.

• Emergency contraception prevents pregnancy.  It is NOT the same as RU-486 (the abortion pill). It DOES NOT interrupt a pregnancy already in progress.  If emergency contraceptive pills are mistakenly taken during pregnancy, they will not harm the developing fetus.  Using emergency contraceptive pills will not affect a woman’s ability to become pregnant in the future.

• Emergency Contraception prevents unplanned pregnancy, which is the very best way to prevent abortion.

• Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association have stated that EC is so safe and so important, it should be available as over-the-counter.

• If used as prescribed by a licensed pharmacist or physician, emergency contraception is a safe and effective way to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

• Emergency contraceptive pills require two doses:

  • First dose within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected intercourse

  • Second dose 12 hours after the first dose

  • Emergency contraceptive pills are more effective the sooner they are taken.

• Many women find it convenient to have emergency contraceptive pills on hand in case of an emergency before it's actually needed.

Availability

• Our emergency contraception program provides EC to women who feel they may be at risk for an unplanned pregnancy.

• The easy access emergency contraception program requires no prescription or doctor visit ahead of time.

• Our Licensed Pharmacist is available to provide Emergency Contraception 24 Hours per day / 7 Days per week.

• Emergency contraception cannot be obtained over the internet at this time.

• Our emergency contraception program is currently only available in the Sate of California.

• Emergency contraception can be obtain from our pharmacy, or our pharmacist can bring it to you anywhere in California¹ .

• There are two different FDA approved Emergency Contraception pills available, Plan B ® and Preven ®.  Our pharmacist recommends Plan B for effectiveness and minimal side effects.

• If you are in California but not in the Los Angeles area, we may be able to arrange for you to pickup your emergency contraception from a pharmacy near you.
