We
seldom think of our skin as an organ, but in fact
the
skin, like the heart, is a vital organ that carries out several
essential bodily functions. It protects us from the environment, is
a key player in our immune system, it regulates body temperature,
provides sensory perception, it synthesizes
Vitamin D for bone building, it detoxifies our body of harmful
toxins as well as many other functions.
So its not surprising that our skin undergoes numerous changes as
we age. And while many of the changes occur below the skins
surface, it is the visible changes that often cause the most
concern. As the years pass, facial characteristics generally become
more pronounced, skin becomes dull, thin and wrinkled, and loss of
elasticity becomes increasingly noticeable. While these changes are
normal, research shows that women, in particular, are continually
becoming increasingly concerned about skin appearance.
The cosmetics market is over-flowing with products touting their
age-defying capabilities. Many of these formulas can sometimes be
effective initially; however, most actually remove moisture from the
skin, resulting in further dryness, thinning, and aged when used on
a long-term basis.
The majority of cosmetics on the market contain high levels of
synthetic chemicals along with insufficient amounts of active
ingredient. According to a report published in the Archives of
Environmental Health, more than fifteen percent of the American
population is chemically sensitive. The most common allergens and
skin irritants are preservatives and synthetic fragrances often
found in cosmetics products. This is why many people are turning to
natural products.
One very important group of product that contribute significantly to
overall skin health are
Essential
fatty acids,
some times referred to as
EFAs. Fatty acids not only play an important role
in hair and skin quality, they also are essential for several other
bodily functions. Research indicates that adequate consumption of
omega fatty acids, such as those found in
fish oil and flax
seed oil can provide nutritional support for healthy skin. The
high concentrations of
omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids present in these oils
provide the body with the essential fatty acids lacking in many
American diets.
Fish oil supplements are a rich source of the polyunsaturated
omega-3 fatty acids,
EPA and DHA. These fatty acids lower blood pressure, and reduce
the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In addition, EPA and DHA may
benefit individuals with asthma, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus
erythematosus, and cancer. Fish oil supplements provide a natural
yet powerful choice in personal health improvement.
Although it is impossible to completely halt the aging process, you
can restore your youthful radiance by protecting and nourishing your
skins cells from the inside out.
